This, coupled with a student body growing more and more accustomed to getting video from the Internet, made it clear that we needed to explore less traditional options.įaculty were already moving toward the Internet to distribute the videos through our Learning Management System.
The problem that arose is that more and more often, college students are not coming to campus with VHS decks.Īn initial attempt to solve the problem with DVD recorders proved problematic due to the numerous ways an instructor could improperly format the disc, such as failing to finalize the disc or leaving it in VRO mode (a recording mode commonly used by many set-top DVD recorders to enable features such as time-shifting, but which produces discs unplayable in the majority of DVD players). Each student would bring in a VHS tape on his or her assigned day to watch at home. Traditionally, this has always been handled with a wall-mounted camera and a VHS deck in the eight classrooms reserved for this course. A core aspect of this course is that each of the roughly 1200 students must give at least three speeches in front of the class throughout the semester, and then review video of that speech later to be critiqued. As part of its General Education program, all incoming freshmen at James Madison University are required to take a General Communications course that deals with giving public presentations. I had the opportunity to be part of a project that makes fairly novel use of Hazel, and our illustrious editor thought you guys might enjoy hearing about it.
